Double Dragon Kunio Kun Retro Brawler Bundle

Growing up playing the likes of Double Dragon II: The Revenge and River City Ransom on NES managed to leave an impression on us, and we’ll always remember those titles fondly. With two controllers plugged in as we fought side-by-side through crime infested streets, we attempted to best the mobs of gang members relentlessly trying to cave our skulls in; excitedly yelling out, “BARF!” with each random goon we knocked out in River City Ransom.

Well, the glory days are coming back, as we’re getting an 8-bit collection from each series, and they’re coming to both the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch this February 20. DOUBLE DRAGON & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle, as its been official named, not only hooks us up with seven classics from days gone by, but also localizes eleven Kunio-kun games for the first time ever.

It’s nice to see them shown love outside of Japan after all these years. We think this will be a nice little bundle for die hard fans like ourselves, and we’re impressed to see the series get support from Arc System Works.

Naturally, there’s going to be people wondering about other notable entries from each series, such as Super Double Dragon or Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun on SNES. The DOUBLE DRAGON & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle is sticking within its Famicom and NES roots for this particular collection, but if this manages to do well, who knows what other collections we may see in the future?

705full Shin Nekketsu Kouha Kunio Tachi No Banka Cover
Have you ever seen something this cool before? We’re guessing not.

We’re admittedly quite excited about Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka, since that’s been one of our favorites to emulate over the years. (Honestly, it really would’ve made for an incredible anime.) How can you go wrong with fighting gangs on a ferris wheel as a kick-happy schoolgirl, or riding on motorcycles at full speed as Kunio stomps the teeth of everyone after him, making the Road Rash games quite proud in the process? You can’t.

For anyone who’s a fan of the genre, let alone of either of these franchises, this is easily one of the best collections you’ll come across. Importers were quick to pick this up back in 2018 when it came out as Kunio-kun: The World Classics Collection, but we’ll officially have a stateside release now. Keep your fists taped up and grab a lead pipe, it’s going to be a long and crazy night.

When there's no more room in Hell, I shall seek appropriate lodging elsewhere.
