Many Nintendo fans will tell you, especially those in the competitive Super Smash Bros. scene, that Gamecube controllers are the go-to standard of choice. Nintendo themselves have re-released Gamecube controllers and adapters for both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii U specifically for this reason.
A modder on YouTube, Shank Mods, uploaded a video of his journey to transforming a Nintendo Wavebird controller into Joy-Cons for his Nintendo Switch. While most of us are foaming at the mouth wanting to throw money at such an idea, for now we can only watch on as Shank takes everyone on a guided journey through all the hurdles he had to overcome to make such a thing happen.
After watching the video, you grow an even bigger appreciation for the amount of ingenuity and effort that goes into such a project. While the concept seemed simple in theory, having to 3D print so many of the parts and the amount of trial-and-error in getting it to all work correctly is simply jaw-dropping. Getting to see the final product in action though certainly seems like it was worth every bit of effort put into it.
While we’re extremely impressed with Shank and his work with the Joy-Cons and the Nintendo Wavebird here, you should take some time to also check out his other mods. His portable Nintendo Gamecube / Nintendo Wii is pretty impressive. Who wouldn’t want Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker or Eternal Darkness on the go?
