Genre: Survival-Horror
Release Date: April 3, 2020
Rating: Mature

Resident Evil 3 (2020) is a full remake of Capcom’s survival-horror classic, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, which follows protagonist Jill Valentine–the heroine from the first Resident Evil title–in her escape from the apocalyptic Racoon City.

Taking place concurrent with the events of Resident Evil 2, Jill will meet other survivors as she battles zombies and other mutant abominations; none of which rival the sheer terror of the Tyrant-type monstrosity that gave the original title its namesake: Nemesis.

Resident Evil 3 (2020) Nemesis

Nemesis, like RE:2‘s Mr. X, serves as a constant and ongoing antagonist. Nemesis, tasked with hunting down and destroying all members of the original S.T.A.R.S team, stalks Jill relentlessly throughout the duration of the game. Resident Evil 3 (2020) equips Nemesis with new ways to track down the player compared to RE:2 (2019)’s Mr. X.

Nemesis is not the mindless juggernaut that early Tyrant prototypes were and shows a much higher level of intelligence. Unlike Mr. X, Nemesis will use tools and weapons to aid him in his murderous quest, as well as give whole new meaning to the word persistent, equipped with a new AI and even breaking through walls unexpectedly.

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis Remake
Nemesis, like RE:2‘s Mr. X, stalks you throughout most of the game.

Like the Resident Evil 2 remake, which we considered to be one of the best games of 2019 (and of the last decade), Resident Evil 3 features updated 3D graphics, a new control scheme, re-imagined level design and enemies, all new voice acting and cut-scenes, and more.

Unlike the GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil, which also made many such changes (e.g. updated graphics, level design, etc.), these latter remakes are entirely new games which bare only a passing resemblance to their predecessors.

Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil 3 (2020) uses Capcom’s modern RE Engine.

These latest remakes feature an entirely new game engine from the originals. Resident Evil 3 (2020) uses Capcom’s modern RE Engine, the same game engine that powers Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 (2019).

You can expect the same basic narrative with only minor changes, but the gameplay is entirely novel, playing like a hybrid of earlier, tank-controlled titles (e.g. RE:Zero through RE:Code Veronica) and the third-person shooter mechanics of later titles (e.g. RE:4 through RE:7).

Resident Evil 3 (2020)

While Resident Evil 3 (2020) shares a lot in common with last year’s RE:2 remake, it comes with one all-new feature that last years title did not: A hybrid co-op/competitive online multiplayer mode, dubbed Resident Evil: Resistance.

This all new multiplayer mode pits friends against one another in a 1-vs-4 survival match where four Survivors must overcome the machinations of an insidious, player-controlled enemy: The Mastermind.

Resident Evil 3 (2020) Resistance Multiplayer Title Cover

Equipped with the ability to summon monsters, set traps, and with surveillance tools like security cameras, the Mastermind must prevent the Survivors from escaping the level within a given time limit.

The Survivors, conversely, must survive waves of the Mastermind’s enemies while solving traditional Resident Evil-style puzzles before time runs out. If the Survivors manage to escape, they win–if they don’t, well, they don’t.

Resident Evil 3 (2020)

Resident Evil 3 was listed as one of The Game Manual’s most anticipated games of 2020, and is likely to be one of the best titles of the year; if not one of the best Resident Evil games ever made.

We highly recommend you pick this game up. It is still available for pre-order on Amazon for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and on Green Man Gaming for Windows PC.
